Feedyards & Backyards

By Aaron Putze, APR,
Executive Director-Public Relations Officer

Every day, farm families that raise livestock provide a valuable service to this state. Their work employs nearly 140,000 Iowans, generates $477 million in local and state tax revenue and stimulates more than $5 billion in economic activity (nearly 6 percent of the state’s total). But more than that, livestock farmers care about their families, neighborhoods and environment. They are volunteers in their community, attend school, church and social functions, patronize local businesses, contribute money to worthwhile causes and invest their time and talents to make life better.

They also assume that food can be produced today just as it was nearly 50 years ago. It can't...and that's OK, especially when you look at today's modern livestock farms.

5127/27/2005 6:09:32 PMTRUE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IS FOUND IN A NEW LIVESTOCK BARNNearly everyone in Iowa is chattering about the importance of economic development. Some argue for more bike trails and gaming facilities. Others look to agriculture, touting livestock and crop farming as the best way to grow Iowa. The CSIF stands with the ag advocates and the opening of a new livestock barn in eastern Iowa July 25 illustrates why.

4576/15/2005 4:42:03 PMHEALTH-PROMOTING ANTIBIOTIC USE IN ANIMALS SAFE, PROVENOpponents of modern livestock farming are hyping the dangers of antibiotics fed to livestock to erode public trust in the safety of our food supply and turn popular opinion against a proven management practice used to raise livestock.

3233/10/2005 8:43:50 AMIF YOU WANT A GOOD LIFE, LIVE NEAR A LIVESTOCK FARMEROne of the best places to live in rural America isn’t home to acres of wide-open prairie, miles of bike trails or majestic mountain ranges. You won’t find sprawling lakes, a mega-mall or 20-screen movie complex. What you will find, however, is a county where livestock farming is booming, home to more farms than any other place in Iowa.
