195/10/2004 11:51:15 AMCoalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers: Statement of Beliefs Iowa needs farmers. Farmers need Iowa. Farming and farm families contribute a uniquely valuable stewardship and citizenship that is precious to Iowa’s towns and our nation.

“We called on the coalition very early when we had questions about a regulatory issue. We wanted to do things right and the Coalition responded quickly with information we needed. We learned right away that the coalition is a dependable place to go and its assistance was extremely valuable for my family. Given our early contact, we’re not surprised by all the coalition has accomplished in its first year.”
- Jim McKnight, Union County grain and livestock farmer

“Work conducted by the Coalition on behalf of Iowa and Iowa farmers is priceless and it’s helping keep families on the land and viable in their communities. With the increasingly complex and costly regulations covering animal agriculture, farmers can use some assistance and the Coalition’s providing it directly to the families that need it most.”
- David Deyoe, a corn, soybean and hog farmer from Nevada (Story County)

“You have a unique opportunity here. If the Coalition to Support Iowa Farmer’s wasn’t in existence, I don’t know where people would go to get assistance of this type. You have the unique opportunity to talk to a lot of people and you talk in many counties. You get all over the state of Iowa and in that process you’ve developed a protocol that you’ve basically proved that will work. And this is very valuable.”

- Jim Meyer, Sac County farmer, former state legislator and CSIF advisory committee member, praising the Coalition’s efforts to work hand-in-hand with livestock farmers to help them grow and prosper responsibly.

“There’s groups that I have to come to the conclusion don’t like farmers and they’re out to destroy the institution of the family farm. And we can’t let that happen. And we can’t assume that city people anymore understand that food grows on farms instead of supermarkets like they believe and we have to tell our story. Not only do we have to tell our story from a public relations standpoint but we have to defend ourselves very aggressively.”
- Sen. Charles Grassley, July 14, 2004 responding to the need for an organization like the CSIF

“I hadn’t built a new hog barn since 1997 and a lot of the rules and regulations have become more stringent since then. I wanted to make sure I did the right thing so I contacted the CSIF for help. I highly recommend them.”
- Wade Finch of Britt who, with son Dan, constructed a new 2,400-head finishing barn in Hancock County

“Farmers will never make Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement happy, but they don't have to. They do need to accommodate their neighbor's concerns in a professional and courteous manner. The Coalition's efforts to help farmers do that are going a long way. Blessed are the peacemakers.”
- David Kruse, President, CommStock Investments, Inc.

“It’s critical that farmers – whether they raise livestock or raise crops – join together to talk about the importance of beef, dairy, hog, poultry and turkey production. After all, livestock consumes nearly one-third of the state’s corn crop and nearly 25 percent of all the soybeans. It’s critical that we grow the business because so many people benefit when that happens. The Coalition filled a void by making regulatory assistance accessible to individual families while empowering them to take pride in their occupation and to tell others about the work they do. Our family is pleased to be involved in such an important effort.”
- Maurice Johnson, Floyd

Maurice and his wife Pam are long-time farm leaders and manage a diversified farm in Floyd County
