Jefferson County is a great place to raise livestock. Its rolling hills and 808 farms are a perfect match for more cattle, poultry and hog enterprises. And its lag behind statewide averages in sales per farm and percent of total sales derived from livestock marketings signal timely opportunities for animal ag growth. Yet some oppose efforts by Jefferson County farmers to add more livestock to their enterprises. Recently, farmers and neighbors came together to celebrate agriculture and to highlight the many ways a strong and vibrant livestock sector benefits the county's economy and quality of life. Livestock farming is critical to Iowa…and Nebraska. Doug Baade, swine feed specialist for Farmers Cooperative Elevator of Plymouth, Neb., knows better than most. For three years, the Iowa native has worked with farmers throughout southeast Nebraska, witnessing the impact stricter regulations have on the ability of livestock farmers to remain in business. Since 1995, Nebraska’s swine inventory has declined by nearly 36 percent. At the same time, regulations impacting livestock farmers have increased. Some Iowans who oppose modern livestock farming in the Hawkeye State often cite Nebraska as an example of how increased regulations can stimulate the growth of livestock enterprises. Those involved in the business have a different perspective.
