(March 10, 2010) Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) sayid a draft of climate change legislation will be presented to lawmakers this month before Congress takes its Easter recess. The aim is to have a draft by March 26.
Lieberman is working with Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on compromise legislation after proposals for a broad emissions-trading program drew criticism from both political parties. The bill is expected to take a sector-by-sector approach to reduce carbon emissions. The plan is to initially cap greenhouse gas emissions only from the power sector, beginning in 2012.
On Tuesday, President Barack Obama convened a meeting at the White House with more than a dozen Democratic and Republican senators to lay the groundwork for passing climate and energy legislation in the Senate this year.
