“We’ve raised hogs outdoors and we’ve raised 'em indoors. The pigs are happier and healthier when they’re raised under a roof, that’s for sure. When it’s 100 degrees next summer, it will be 80 degrees in here. And when it’s 20 below outside in a couple of months, it’ll be 70 in here. There’s little doubt where the hogs would rather be.” Complete Story

Iowa’s dairy industry is growing thanks to families like the Telleens of Monticello. Bruce and Jani (center), son Klark (right) and herdsman Mike Nietert manage a 100-cow dairy farm nestled among the rolling hills of eastern Iowa. Nietert, a husband and father of four, is a graduate of Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar where he obtained a degree in dairy herd management. Klark, an energetic optimist and longtime 4-H and FFA leader, plans to join in the full-time management of the farm upon obtaining his ag studies degree from Iowa State University. A renewed interest among young people and strong dairy prices are good things for the state’s dairy industry. Since 2004, Iowa’s dairy herd has grown by nearly 20,000 dairy cows. Today, the state is home to 212,000 dairy cows producing 4.13 billion pounds of milk. This work originates on 2,143 dairy farms, including the Telleens.

Jake Johnson and his wife, Paige are looking forward to placing their first herd of cattle on feed in the family's new hoop barn under construction near Kanawha. The Johnsons want to build two additional hoop barns within the next couple years. Cattle farmers across Iowa are increasingly optimistic about the future of cattle feeding in Iowa. The growth of the state’s renewable fuels industry is helping sustain the optimism. Renewable fuels facilities produce abundant, nutrient-rich co-products called distillers grain that can be fed to cattle, dairy cows and hogs. Complete Story
