PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS (PETA)

In Their Own Words

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), based in Norfolk, Virginia, has been described as “by far the most successful radical organization in America.” The key word is radical. PETA seeks “total animal liberation,” according to its president and co-founder, Ingrid Newkirk. That means no meat or dairy, of course; but it also means no aquariums, no circuses, no hunting or fishing, no fur or leather, and no medical research using animals. PETA is even opposed to the use of seeing-eye dogs. Bruce Friedrich, who serves as PETA's Vegan Coordinator, is a former Grinnell College student who has advocated violence against those involved in any facet of livestock farming or meat consumption

“I responded that it was too late this year to do anything different, but I did say that I would take this before the congregation for future consideration. I think PETA can be very aggressive at times, but I respect the passion behind it.”

Rev. David Digby
First Christian Church, Ames
Ames Tribune, Nov. 17, 2004
In response to a request from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that the church not serve “turkey carcasses” as part of its annual community Thanksgiving Day dinner.
