Iowa Network for Local Control
The INLC, launched in 2006, bills itself as a coalition of concerned Iowa citizens seeking local control of zoning for livestock. It's leadership prefers that counties have the ability to restrict where and how livestock can be raised in Iowa.
When launched, the group sought to raise $200,000 to lobby for county control of livestock farming. It has followed through with that pledge and used its resources to run advertising, conduct meetings and distribute brochures criticizing farm families who raise livestock (the group hesitates to say much about the amount or sources of its funding).
The group, which works in concert with the Iowa Farmers Union and other like-minded organizations, was created when a new farm was proposed for Dickinson County at a site located more than four miles west of West Okoboji. Several community members objected and successfully pressured the farm from suspending construction despite the proposed site being a good one.
Chris Murphy, INLC President, applauded the new farm's defeat and showed the group's true mission. "This operation does not belong here, specifically," she told the Sioux City Journal, "nor does it belong anywhere in Dickinson County."
