Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, a Des Moines-based activist group, was conceived in 1975 by "a handful of clergy" meeting in the rectory of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waterloo. Today, the organization boasts 2,300 members in seven chapters across Iowa. It's mission is to "empower and unite grassroots people of all ethnic backgrounds to take control of their communities; involve them in identifying problems and needs and in taking action to address them; and be a vehicle for social, economic, and environmental justice."

“To the ICCI, animals shouldn't be raised in modern confinement buildings. The group's leaders say producers focusing on volume --- whether grain or livestock --- aren't family farmers but a detriment to Iowa's economy, environment and social structure. Its focus now is to stop what they consider factory farms --- those that use confinement buildings to house livestock. ‘I think a hog factory is total confinement with a (manure) pit,’ said ICCI president Kurt Kelsey.”
Matt Wilde, Staff Writer Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004

“CCI staff member Lisa Whelan said factory farms are those that need a permit to operate.”
Tom McMahon, Staff Writer The Daily Nonpareil (Council Bluffs) July 10, 2004

Hugh Espey, Director, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, When asked if he had ever been in a modern livestock barn, Des Moines Register (Oct. 19, 2004
“Inside? No, I’ve seen videos and talked to folks who have worked in them. I’ve driven by them.”

ICCI Rally

Nearly 175 activist members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement took time during their 2007 state convention to gather July 14 at 8:45 a.m. at the home of a West Des Moines resident to protest the growth of livestock farming in Iowa. The demonstrators arrived on the scene in four school busses and converged on the front yard and porch of Aaron Putze, Executive Director of the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers. They waved banners and shouted their disproval of livestock using a public address system. ICCI members and supporters also placed a billboard on the property and circled around to the backyard and throughout the neighborhood distributing flyers calling out Putze for the group's "Bad Neighbor Award." Demonstrators dispersed after the West Des Moines Police Department arrived. The boisterous rally was condemned two days later by the Des Moines Register editorial board. Said one neighbor who was not amused: "They (ICCI activists) say they're for being good neighbors, yet they trespass onto private property and use loudspeakers to blare their protests on a Saturday morning to unsuspecting residents, all of whom support livestock. They came to my door and asked me if I support clean air. I said 'of course,' and then asked them why all of their bus drivers were smoking cigarettes. Seems as though that's worse for air quality than having livestock."
